How to Make a Hanging Orchid Planter
Project Overview
  • Working Time: 20 minutes
  • Total Time: 20 minutes
  • Skill Level: Kid-friendly

Display gorgeous orchids in a mod metal planter filled with soft moss and groundcover. This arrangement uses chartreuse sedum and Spanish moss for high-contrast against colorful orchid blooms. With the right materials, this project is super simple and ends up looking sleek.

What You'll Need

Equipment / Tools

  • Container for soaking moss

Materials

  • 1 Sphere planter
  • Spanish moss
  • Orchids
  • Sphagnum moss
  • Potting soil
  • Groundcover sedum; we used 'Angelica' sedum

Instructions

  1. Fill Bottom With Moss

Fill the bottom of the planter with Spanish moss, pressing the moss to the sides and leaving a hole in the center. This will result in a bowl-like shape.

  2. Soak and Place Sphagnum Moss

Soak sphagnum moss well in a container for at least 30 seconds. Then, slightly wring out excess water and put the wet sphagnum moss in the center of the Spanish moss.

  3. Tuck In Orchids

Leaving orchids in their nursery pots, tuck them within the sphagnum moss so they are held in place and covered with it.

  4. Add Soil

Add a 1 inch layer of potting soil on top of the sphagnum moss.

  5. Plant Sedum

Plant sedum in the top layer of soil, arranging it around the orchids. Try to cover as much of the exposed dirt with the sedum plants to create a dense groundcover.
