Riot Games recently provided full details on "League of Legends Classic," a project that had been hinted at for several weeks. The new mode is scheduled for an earlier-than-expected launch, becoming a free addition to the game on July 29 with Patch 26.15. The concept for this nostalgic experience originated during an internal "Thunderdome" hackathon at Riot Games. A group of developers passionate about the game's history crafted a prototype based on the acclaimed Season 3, which ran from 2012 to 2013.
These exciting revelations were made during the MSI 2026 Finals for LoL Esports, an event that also featured an exhibition match showcasing the new mode. According to an FAQ on the official "League of Legends Classic" website, the mode will be seamlessly integrated into the existing Riot Client. Executive Producer Paul Bellezza clarified that "Classic" isn't a complete reset to version 1.0 but rather a "greatest hits of League" from around Season 3. It will launch with the original 40 champions, alongside 20 additional "classic" champions. Players can look forward to the return of the old champion and rune selection methods, as well as the offense, defense, and utility skill trees from the mastery system.
